About TRU NIAGEN®

What is NIAGEN®?

NIAGEN® is the first and only commercially available form of nicotinamide riboside (NR), a naturally-occurring compound found in trace amounts in milk.  It is the product of decades of groundbreaking scientific research conducted by ProHealthspan's Co-Founder and Chief Scientist, Charles Brenner, PhD.

Why is NIAGEN® important? 

In 2004, our co-founder and Chief Scientist, Dr. Charles Brenner made a breakthrough discovery that ignited the science and research behind metabolism and aging.  Before Dr. Brenner's discovery there were only three known precursors for NAD+ (a widely studied, and very important metabolite), namely tryptophan, niacin and nicotinamide.  Tryptophan, is not efficiently converted  to NAD+, while niacin causes an undesirable side effect referred to as the "niacin flush" in which the skin becomes red and warm, often accompanied by a burning sensation and itching.  The third, nicotinamide, inhibits sirtuins.  

Thus, while everyone wanted to increase the activity of sirtuins and elevate NAD+ in order to boost metabolism, there was no practical way to do it.

Dr. Brenner’s discovery of NR as a vitamin precursor of NAD+ that doesn’t cause flushing and doesn’t inhibit sirtuins paved the way for its patented commercialization as NIAGEN® by ChromaDex.
